Floodwaters affect not only homes and other building structures, but also nearby cars. And just as is the case with your home, cars left in standing water can lead to disastrous effects. If the water level has stayed above the bottom of the doors for some time, there's a chance the car might be deemed totaled when inspected by a mechanic.

But in many cases, cars can be cleaned and salvaged with only minor repairs. We've compiled some tips to help if you find yourself in a similar situation, but you should consult with a mechanic about the specific damage done to your vehicle.

Drying And Cleaning

Drying out the car's interior as quickly as possible helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew, which can be harmful to your health. You can rent industrial strength fans to help with the task, but you may need to replace the carpeting, interior panels and upholstery, depending on the level of damage. Meanwhile, hard surfaces (like the dashboard and center console) can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution for sanitization.

In severe cases, you may need to seek assistance so the affected areas can be disassembled and cleaned. The job can be made tough if floodwater seeped into interior crevices.

Mechanical Systems

Unfortunately, floodwaters also carry sludge that can muck up the mechanical components of your vehicle. The steering system, engine, transmission and brakes are the most vulnerable to related damages. The water must be drained out from mechanical systems, which should then be flushed out with clean water or appropriate cleaning solutions.

Additionally, you'll have to replace any fluids that have been contaminated. Drain and replace the motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid and brake fluid as needed.

Electrical Systems

Some electronic components can be dried and salvaged. But parts kept in contact with water for a prolonged period of time may be damaged beyond repair. Additionally, corrosion can continue to occur even after drying. Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle to determine which electrical system or systems might need some TLC.
