Your business likely depends on technology for gaining new customers ;and various other tasks. However, it doesn't come without drawbacks. Recent events have caused people to be more aware of what people are able to do with data that's floating around in cyberspace. How can you protect your business from cybercrime? With a mixture of technology and traditional methods that protect the information that you can't allow to get into the wrong hands. Here are five ways in which you can protect your business.
- Shred old documents. Old, unneeded contracts, bills, credit card statements, insurance policies and tax returns should be finely shredded. You can even go a step further to have it cut into confetti-like pieces to ensure that even the greatest puzzle master would struggle to piece together your old documents.
- Invest in a fireproof safe. Your most important documents with sensitive information are best stored in a fireproof safe. Not only does it prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on the information, but it also protects it in the event of a fire. Inside the safe, you should store your bank account numbers, passwords, the bank's phone number and credit card information in case documents are stolen from your office.
- Get a safety deposit box at the bank. It's not unusual to have duplicates of documents and store them off-site. A safety deposit box at the bank is affordable and allows you to have a copy just in case a natural disaster destroys or carries away your fireproof safe. Usually people store the original copies in here and keep a copy in their safe. Even though it may be a minor hassle to go to the bank occasionally, it's a small price to pay for the extra security.
- Install an alarm system. If you don't already have one in your office, or if you have a small home office, investing in an alarm system is one of the best things you can do. Technology is great these days and companies offer competitive pricing, so there are options for everyone, regardless of your budget.
- Call your independent insurance agent. It's essential to know what your business insurance policy does and does not cover, along with updating your coverage if necessary. Schedule a yearly appointment with your agent so that you can review your policy.
While these safeguards will take up some of your business profits, it's money well invested to ensure your business can continue in a "worst case scenario" situation.
